Studied clarinet and saxophone (1951-4) with William Green, counterpoint and composition with Leonard Stein (1955-6) and electronic music with Richard Maxfield (1960-1). In 1959 he studied with Stockhausen where he became familiar with John Cage's work. In 1970 he began studying the Kirana style of classical Indian vocal music. In 1962 he founded the Theater of eternal Music for the performances of his own compositions. He was music editor of S.M.S. and edited An Anthology which contained his compositions, essays, poetry and mixed media works. His better known works are: COMPOSITION NO. 2 which tells the performer to build a fire in front of an audience. COMPOSITION NO. 5 releasing butterflies into the audience COMPOSITION 1961 NOS. 1-29 which instruct the performer to draw a straight line and follow it. Poem for table, chairs and benches etc (1959). His later works are systems of frequencies which can be performed from performance to performance, in theory this performance can last for thousands of years. Drones produced vocally, instrumentally and electronically are dominant in these later pieces. Since 1964 Young has been working on a single piece, THE TORTOISE, HIS DREAMS AND JOURNEYS. This work has been performed at various times in different sections using, VV, mixers, amplifiers, drones and loud speakers. Since 1966 he has been developing a section of THE TORTOISE which embodies his theories contained in his TWO SYSTEMS OF ELEVEN CATEGORIES 1:07:40 AM 3 X 67 at once a theoretical work and score.
