RECORD AND TAPE REVIEWS
ALVIN LUCIER - I Am Sitting in a Room L.P.
This disc begins in great style with Lucier stammering through a sequence of words in his characteristically sinister manner. As he repeats, the feedback and distortion is bloated gradually through the LP. But sadly the explosive climax it suggests never materialises and it levels out into 'chronic boredom'. A bit of an anticlimax after such a promising build-up.
CABARET VOLTAIRE - SLUGGIN FOR JESUS
track 3 is passable but the rest is pure gibson brothers
CABARET VOLTAIRE - LIVE AT THE YMCA - ROUGH TRADE
like tg cabaret voltaire have mellowed out into another funk band as far as tgs album is concerned i see no discenable parody on their part however it is much better than the human league and its quality makes it even more endearing
CHARLES MANSON - 13 SONGS L.P.
strange melancholy ballads from the mass murderer including 2 rather experimental tracks.
CLOCK DVA - INDUSTRIAL CASSETTE AND L.P.
the sleeve notes on the album written by gporridge is such drivel pretentious and meaningless the cassette is better than the record but the music at its best is clearly from boring and bored hippies who have already sold their souls
CONSUMER ELECTRONICS
A sample from this superb tape can be found on 'Fur Ilse Koch' - this is power electronics at its very best. Very well recorded at maximum intensity.
CRASS - NAGASAKI NIGHTMARE
feminist AND pretentious shit another example of aging hippies
THE CURE - A FOREST - FICTION
not as good as train even boring at times harks back to days of pink floyd my grandma keeps telling me about
DAN FROBERG (Sweden)
Well recorded tape, at times very reminiscent of NWW's track on the Second Coming - a lot of use of tape loops, backward music and radio stations. At times, perhaps, a bit laid back but mostly good quality material.
DEUTSCHE AMERICANISCHE FREUNDSCHAFTE - KOBABTRAUMA - MUTE
best release on mute since the normal way back when the rest is undiluted pop an aggressive sequence underlies rather unconvincing vocals enjoyable
DEUTSCHE AMERICANISCHE FREUNDSCHAFTE - DIE KLEINEN UND DIE BOSEN - MUTE
also suffering from a singularly decrepit and unimaginitive sleeve this album is an improvement on TGs however the heavy metal power drumming and the discs synth gets on the nerves after a couple of tracks
ETAT BRUT 8
Quite an old cassette (1980) from this fine Belgian group revealing a number of blatant influences but refreshing nonetheless - the recording is a little muddy but still quite satisfactory.
HALF JAPANESE - TRIPLE L.P.
typical thrash from 1/2 japanese amidst half a dozen pseudo electronic pieces
JOY DIVISION - CLOSER - FACTORY
after the abrasive atmosphere of their debut this their second turns off like a pail of water on an erection it really is rock and roll shit
KRANG MUSIC (cassette) - CODED INFORMATION SYSTEMS
I wish somehow that I hadn't received an insert with this one. Very badly designed and excessively tacky in execution, this somehow detracts needlessly from the excellent contents of the tape. Had I been unaware of the fixation wiht every paranoids wet dream, Ronald Reagan, the extreme sounds would not have been dulled for me. I also have no desire to picture the extensive list of equipment that takes up best half of the insert, in use. The superb constant wall of noise shimmers with perfection when stripped of its liner-note pretensions. The problem with this, that does not, as far as I know exist in foreign countries (the case of Stigma Diaboli), is that such is the sheer volume of tenth rate bedroom Joy Division fans plagueing the "independent" tape situation in this country at the moment, this offering is almost bound for total obscurity. As is any release in this format, unless supported by a 'name', or a good selling record. The sound contained is worthy of support, the attitudes embodied in the presentation of same are very definately not.
MAURIZIO BIANCHI - 'MENSES' L.P.
Suicidal album. Death is a pleasure after a side of this record - it makes Come's 'I'm Jack' seem like the Christmas Oratorio' Let MB be your executioner!
MAURIZIO BIANCHI - SYMPHONY FOR A GENOCIDE L.P.
Cheap sleeve with good intentions (nice picture selection). There are two different MB styles - the technological power works (X, NH, TRIUMPH) and secondly the low key depression pieces which this record belongs to. All types of death do well with this ultimate funeral - Maurizio is ready to unload his death cargo.
MB - "TECHNOLOGY X" - BIANCHI MAURIZIO (cassette)
From Italy comes a tape from somebody much given to care about presentation, unlike Krang music. What emanates whilst playing is slow, rather hypnotic, but also a little boring. That is until the cassette has been allowed to play through. The repetition metamorphoses from boring to hypnotic, to overkill tecniques. It is slow, slow, slow, grind into the senses, which suprisingly enervates the uplifts. This is quite obviously a private world which we are forced to enter, rather than be allowed to. The reluctance to participate which is felt at first is bludgeoned inot a sense of joy in fascination. It has detail that manifests itself subtly while the listener isn't looking. Every aspect of itself falls dutifully under the magnifying glass. A gleaming worm inside the rotting apple: seek out.
METADRIVE - '78-81' Three Years of.
On the face of it this tape should be given immediate condemnation as it contains a cover version of 'MAGGOT DEATH'. Considering this factor, it is a miracle, but this is mostly an excellent tape. An extreme TG at times, a LEIBSTANDARTE SS MB at others, not forgetting the occasional flicker of NWW! Well recorded, plenty of good variety. The titles of the tracks, however, are pathetic! 'Talkin' about', 'Industrial Lullaby', 'Radiopower' you could be forgiven for thinking that the music is 'rockabilly'. Musica-ly recommended, however.
MOTORHEAD - BOMBER BRONZE
rock and roll time is awful yet the difference between motorhead and judas priest is synonymous with the human league or the normal and throbbing gristle like tg they are the extreme and thus peers however album is still awful
NON L.P. - MUTE
typically eccentric american boyd rice already proving himself as shallow as urine undoes all the good he achieves on this disc
NPV - Naked Pygmy Voles
Aggressive free-form music with conventional (-ish) instruments -strangely, this tape of music is very difficult to do well, the temptation is to just piss about in a self-indulgent fashion at the listener's expense. NPV, I think, unintentionally fall into this trap. What they require is a new sense of self-discipline and an extra shot of brutality and aggression. This tape has been excellently recorded and NPV have great potentioal having youtha and attitude on their side. Recommended.
NURSE WITH WOUND - CHANCE MEETING - UNITED DIARIES
silly album title but one of the few genuine antimusic records ever it really is an all out assault which is marred only by some out of place cosmic guitar theyll be toiling to equal the intensity of this album with their second
NURSE WITH WOUND -
apart from some suspicious surrealist/futurist pretensions and interminable sides these 2 albums are both very accomplished and impressive musically and conceptually.
PHILLIP AND HIS FOETUS VIBRATIONS - TELL ME, WHAT IS THE BANE OF YOUR LIFE?
Well known hysterically un-funny 'seven piece San Franciscan' group turn to the losers way out (see Clock DVA, Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire, Human League, etc etc etc...) of daaance music maaan. Perhaps an attempt at subversion, but far too close to the Jacksons than is necessary my dears. A few ingenious twists of the knife does not a true killer make. Loud derisive screams of "COMPROMISE" should follow it as you throw it out of your window.
SURGICAL DIVISION
Very uncompromising minimal attack from SD. This cassette can be tedious on its own so using it as background music can prove fruitful. It sounds like electric shock treatment being administered to a cadaver.
THIS HEAT - HEALTH AND EFFICIENCY
the a side is up to their customary low standards but the b side is, incredible considering their fetidity, not bad.
THROBBING GRISTLE - LIVE AT THE SCALE (BOOTLEG)
after the hateful funk greats this might be tg back to their classic brighton era visually they were a bit laid back but the waves of unadulterated white and black noise were agony and ecstasy combined will they be there to lead the second coming
THROBBING GRISTLE - HEATHEN EARTH - INDUSTRIAL
apart from the nauseatingly mundane sleeve the inane pseudocitation on the front the soft focus playboy snapshots and the craclicking namechecks i could still forgive this album if the music was good unfortunately after an encouraging start on side one it degenerates into fifth rate emerson lake and palmer
THROBBING GRISTLE - "SUBHUMAN", "ADRENALIN", ETC.
commercial crap - as wet as piss if not wetter
VARIOUS ARTISTS - HOISTING THE BLACK FLAG -UNITED DIARIES
a half hearted attempt at classical respectability the best track is the nurse with wound piece but even this is handicapped by the aging lemon kittens and their throwaway wanker ??? the deadly boring truth club and friends and the jocular aarvarks the whitehouse track just dont belong. for 30 year old hippies only
LIVE REVIEWS
DAF at MOONLIGHT CLUB
depressingly average the singer attempting a third class bruce lee pose the guitarist obviously thought he was cool (he was an embarrassment) the drummer went like clockwork
THIS HEAT at NOTRE DAME HALL
crap from hippies like this heat should have died years ago the audience average age was 35 predictably enjoyed their gong like show
BOOK REVIEWS
WITH WILLIAM BURROUGHS - by VICTOR BOCKRIS - SEAVER BOOKS (U.S. IMPORT)
Whatever ideas about Mr. Burroughs you might have had before, after reading this, you won't. Burroughs has a use (or rather had a use) to instruct a literate person in the art of expression of their deepest caprices and and aspirations, through the realisation of what could lie in the way to hinder them. Since 1964 he has wallowed in his own ideas until he stinks of the same stench he would have had you avoid then. He has systematically re-enforced the walls he tore down, and hides behind this smoke screen of self pitying paranoia to make his last years safer. This is not to deny the fact that he was one of the most important post-war writers. His "Cities of the Red Night" (1961) shows the occasional flash of the same visionthat made his words worth scrutiny once. Unfortunately, the rut he has settled into has attracted people such as Bockris. A man whose all-time favorite hero is the nauseating Muhammed Ali. The book is fashioned from transcripts of conversations at dinner parties contrived by this human leech. He sucks and genuflects with such fervor, and with such quantity, that his dialogue is a pitiful emetic. Photographs of Burroughs making coffee? Making a bed? Getting chummy with Tenessee Williams???
The book could have have been useful as a guideline on the decline of Burroughs' effectiveness as a thinker and writer, but fails. Falling into a vacuous foot-kissing exercise worthy of the utmost contempt. Victor Bockris should be shot, and W.S. Burroughs should be put in an old peoples home with a large sheet of paper on which he should write for the rest of his life, over and over again, "I will realise that little boys and guns get boring after a while".
